There is a myth that goes around saying it's ok to top your tree, it promotes good growth, or your tree is too tall. The truth is this is all false knowledge when coming to the health of a tree. You're trees leaves are a huge source of the food for the tree. When topping it your losing 50-100 percent of its foliage. When this is all removed along with it looking mutilated your also starving it leading to it to have anxiety, going into to fight or flight mode! It has dormant buds set for the following year, when topping, it activates these and cause sprouts to pop up below where the cuts were made. This is not good growth it's actually the opposite. It grows extremely fast and is very weak. With all the foliage gone it also leads to sunburn on the exposed bark. This can lead to a branch or part of the tree dying . It also puts extreme stress and leaves the tree more susceptible to diseases and insects. It can't defend itself with little nutrients. A tree knows to close up a wound when properly pruned. When topping it leaves stubs or wounds that can't close or compartmentalize like it suppose to. Which leads to decay and possible death. Lastly it's get to be extremely expensive ( if the tree can survive ). With constant sprouts it will need topped every year or two. Then when it dies it will need to be removed. It also causes hazardous situations due to the branches being weak. In the end A tree is meant to grow tall, there are ways to handle it, and it's not promoting good growth to the tree, yet a slow death.
